The overall mission of the Community Relations Unit is to unite the police department and the community to improve communication, increase understanding and promote the partnership to prevent crime and improve the quality of life. Some of the CRU's responsibilities include:
- Provide crime prevention information and implement crime prevention training programs
- Conduct public safety talks at local schools, community events, churches, and organizations
- Educate the public about crime trends and the impact they have on the community
- Resolve ongoing problems and quality of life issues through creative problem-solving and coordination with various city, county, and state resources
- Educate the public about the use of the online reporting system
- Coordinate the Citizen Academy (English and Spanish)
- Coordinate the Citizen Patrol
- Answer questions about establishing a neighborhood watch program
- Assist patrol personnel with crime prevention information, visual aids, and material
- Provide crime prevention surveys of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings
