Councilmember Scarlet Peralta immigrated from Mexico and was raised in Montebello. A proud graduate of Montebello schools, she became the first in her family to earn a college degree in the U.S, receiving a B.A. in Global Studies from UC Santa Barbara and a Master’s in Public Policy from UC Irvine.
After graduate school, she expanded her policy experience at El Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas in Mexico City, where she focused on water resource policy. She later transitioned into the nonprofit sector and now serves as a program director in economic development, leading efforts to grow high-impact industries—such as bioscience, aerospace, and clean energy—while expanding inclusive workforce pathways that eliminate barriers and create opportunities for historically underserved communities.
Over the course of a decade, she has actively volunteered, providing assistance to various organizations, including the Mexican American Opportunity Foundation, Montebello-Commerce YMCA, Lions Club, and Hearts of Montebello. Formerly serving as a mentor in Montebello's College Bound Today Program, she also co-established the AVID Alumni Fund at Schurr High School, dedicated to raising scholarships for college-bound seniors.
In 2020, she made history as Montebello’s youngest elected official and went on to serve as Mayor in 2023. She now continues her leadership as a City Councilmember, championing workforce development, sustainability, and inclusive, labor-focused economic policies. A dedicated advocate for women-owned businesses, she also prioritizes traffic safety, expands access to open spaces, and remains committed to building a more inclusive community. Outside of public service, she enjoys cooking and long walks with her canine companions, Diego, Apollo and Ebe.
